A wooden ceiling is one of the most versatile models, ideally suited to both classic décor and interior designs in a modern style. A wooden ceiling is not old-fashioned, on the contrary, it is a growing trend in interior design as it creates an atmosphere that can hardly be overcome. Wood is a traditional material that has been used for centuries for the construction of houses and their decoration. Today it is a popular material for ceiling decoration, as it protects the environment from cold and overheating, it is environmentally safe and durable. These ceilings can be combined with many types of interiors, making the room cozy and elegant.
What should you consider when choosing a wooden ceiling?
Wood, as a material, has an extraordinary beauty, a unique texture and veining and this is just one of the reasons why it never loses its popularity. However, if you consider a wooden ceiling for one or more rooms in your home, you should think carefully about several important questions.
Is there enough space? A wooden ceiling looks better in a high room, as it partly steals space. If the height of the room is sufficient (at least 3 meters), you can choose almost all types of wooden ceiling, but if the ceilings are lower, you will have to think about an alternative. You can paint the ceiling in white or in the same color as the walls which will be a way to solve the height problem and the room will appear visually higher.
Harmony of the wooden floor and ceiling – if both the floor and the ceiling are made of wood, the designers recommend darker shades for the floor and light colors for the walls. If the ceiling is made of dark wood or stained in a dark shade, this could create a gloomy atmosphere. Use dark shades in rooms with good lighting, both natural and artificial, to avoid pretending that the ceiling is too low.
Match colors: this is essential for the overall appearance of the room. If the interior of the room is dominated by neutral and cold colors, you can make it more inviting and more welcoming by using a sandy shade for the ceiling. When there are many wooden elements inside, it will be a good idea to choose an option with exposed wood beams for the ceiling that will work harmoniously with the other elements inside. Do not be afraid to combine different techniques: a section of wood in the center and plasterboard in the color of the walls along the edges of the ceiling will make the room appear taller.
Wooden ceiling in domestic interiors – advantages and disadvantages
The wooden ceiling in the domestic interior is often considered a universal and multifunctional design. Many designers prefer this type of ceiling to create a practical and at the same time beautiful decor in living rooms, bedrooms, kitchens, study, home office, home library and even bathroom. Wood has many advantages and benefits to offer that make it one of the best choices of customers and here are some of the main ones:
- Respect for the environment – ceilings made of natural material not only allow the natural beauty of the design to be emphasized in every room, but are also completely safe for human health.
- Versatility: wood offers a huge variety of material solutions that allows you to add character and individuality to any room. It is available in panels, tables, tiles and, depending on the aspect you want to achieve, you can choose from numerous options. Furthermore, it is possible to hide small problems or imperfections of the main ceiling, hide communications, electrical wiring, etc.
- Durability: high quality wood will retain its original appearance for a long time and, if properly maintained, you will enjoy your beautiful ceiling for decades
- Insulating properties: this is one of the great advantages of wood compared to alternative materials. It has excellent sound-absorbing properties and will eliminate annoying noises. Furthermore, this is one of the materials with the highest thermal insulation qualities, which means that the temperature in the room is easily maintained.
- Aesthetic appeal: the visual appeal of wood and its unique beauty, texture and richness of texture are characteristics that have been appreciated for hundreds of years and although modern industry offers alternatives at a more accessible price, natural wood remains one of the materials with the highest aesthetic value.
As you know, there are no perfect finishing materials, and wood is no exception. It is susceptible to damage water, it can deform, break, rot and requires special treatment with special impregnation. A wooden ceiling has two other enemies – fire and parasites – which means that the ceiling will require treatment with special protective products.
Mushrooms and molds may also appear. To avoid this, even during production, the wood must be treated with special chemical compounds.
The wooden ceilings absorb steam and odors and without additional protection, they will change its color and become deformed.
The price can also be a big inconvenience, depending on the species of wood. Rare and exotic species can be very expensive, but the market offers many alternatives to suit any budget.
How to combine a wooden ceiling with other finishing materials in interior design?
When you hear “wooden ceiling”, very often the first image that comes to mind is a log home or a rustic-style interior. This is normal, since wood is the most popular material for this style. From the point of view of design, wood is one of the most universal materials to work with, since it works in harmony with any other natural material, even with an artificial one.
The ceiling and the wooden walls are one of the style options, which gives the space a special charm and exceptional warmth. You can use the corresponding colors or stain the wood in contras shades if you are looking for visual dynamics.
Wood and stone are “the perfect combination”. Blocks of concrete, masonry or natural stone in the design of the walls will be an excellent choice for many styles of furniture: rustic, Mediterranean, industrial, shabby chic, traditional, craftsman and even contemporary interiors will benefit from this combination.
The wooden ceilings are beautifully combined with white plastered walls. These designs take advantage of the different textures of smooth walls and wood and have a great aesthetic value.
The ceiling and the wooden floor are another option that enjoys great popularity. This combination is really beautiful and often the color of the wood is combined with the floor and the ceiling.
Wood and artificial materials do not work well enough, especially PVC wall panels, for example. However, it is not impossible to get a good look, especially if you play with colors. The natural light wood on the ceiling can be a complement to the wall panels that imitate dark wood. That said, we must emphasize that unless you are an experienced decorator or interior designer, it is best to avoid such experiments as the result may be disappointing.
Paint or do not paint wooden ceilings: this is a good question!
Should you paint a wooden ceiling? This is a heated debate and you can listen to different and contradictory opinions. Each option has its supporters and they have their arguments.
For us, the right answer to this question depends on the esthetic preferences of homeowners and the general interior concept of the room. If the house is decorated in a rustic, country or Provencal style, or there are many other wooden elements, then the wooden ceiling inside will look more harmonious if its natural appearance is preserved. You can choose from different options to treat the wood itself – impregnation solutions, staining, lacquer or varnish – all this will protect the material without hiding its design and texture.
If the style of the house does not involve preserving the natural structure of the wood, then it remains an option – paint the ceiling with paint.
Why paint the wooden ceiling? This creates a stable and lasting color coating on the surface, completely covering the natural structure of the wood. There are some practical reasons how to add light to the room, especially in small and dark areas, where natural light is limited, painting white ceiing is a good idea. White makes the ceiling appear higher than it actually is. This is another advantage to painting the ceiling. Beyond that, painting the point where you can hide small cracks, scars or holes. Be sure to use safe paints that do not emit odors and do not contain toxic substances. Always read the labels carefully and check if the product is intended for interior decoration.
What color – light or dark – is it better to paint the ceiling? Once again, this depends on the concept of interior design. Wood is a material that seems heavy, so if you prefer dark colors, the room should have adequate height. The light shades visually increase the height of the ceiling, so it is better to choose white, cream, sand or light gray.
