The reasons for a project focused on Africa are explained to us by Patrizia Moroso, who designed the event and asked Stephen Burks to design the installation in the Moroso showroom in Milan, Via Pontaccio:
“Modern multi-faceted Africa deserves to be known and supported for the originality of the creative languages which it enriches world culture. The African continent is extraordinarily rich in creativity, materials and ideas, sources of inspiration and food for us. Applied to design, they generate products that exude tradition and modernity, innovation and history, form and beauty.
I think there is so much of Africa and at this event, my intention was to present the creativity of some of the greatest artists and personalities of contemporary African culture. Beyond the stereotypes that present Africa as a tragic or, at best, exotic experience, we want to highlight some aspects of contemporary African culture, which is actually comparable to world culture. Looking at Africa through the eyes of contemporary art, photography, architecture and design is perhaps the most appropriate way to approach this vast and powerful continent, rich in creativity and diversity, which always makes it one of the greatest sources of inspiration for Western modernity.“.
